Freelance Hourly Rate vs. Employee Salary

Freelancers must charge more than employees to cover:

  1. Self-Employment Tax: You pay both the employer and employee share.
  2. Unpaid Time: Sick days, vacations, and holidays are not paid.
  3. Overhead: Software, hardware, and office space.

A good rule of thumb is to multiply your desired employee hourly rate by 1.5x to 2x to get your freelance rate.
